Week 8 Discussion COLLAPSE Overall Rating: 12345 12345 This week you learned about the importance of adopting a growth mindset vs. a fixed mindset. Describe a time in your life when you faced an important opportunity or challenge with a fixed mindset? What held you back? Were you concerned about your ability to succeed? Were you worried about other people’s perception of you? (Briefly describe the situation.) If you could go back in time and redo this situation with a growth mindset, how would that change your approach and the outcome? Note: As a reminder, students should post twice in the discussion: one original and a response to another student. Akima Byfield RE: Week 8 Discussion COLLAPSE Overall Rating: 12345 12345 Hi everyone, I might have benefited in many situations in my life by adopting a development attitude instead of a fixed perspective. The clearest example that comes to me is when, before there were as many companies like the one I just described, I said to my childhood buddy in 2016 that I wanted to run a suite of salons that I would rent out to hair stylists, nail artists, and aestheticians. Although her attitude shouldn’t have affected me negatively, it did, and it discouraged me from pursuing the project I really wanted to. She replied, “I wouldn’t expect you to want to open anything like that, you don’t even know anything about hair or that industry.” In the end, I never actually took the actions to explore if I’d be successful. I was held back by my own self-doubt as well as her unfavorable criticism since I was really worried about my capacity to succeed given my lack of cosmetology abilities while having knowledge and expertise in operations. Obviously, I was also really concerned about how other people could see me. I truly listened to her when she disproved a dream I had. MAJOR MISTAKE. Years later, I’m still troubled by the interaction and talk, and I’m now sobbing in a puddle of remorse. First off, running a business—which is exactly what I intended to do—does not need competence in cosmetology. I will collect money from the space that licensed aestheticians are renting while providing them with a cozy, friendly, and aesthetically beautiful place to do their trade. If I had a development mentality, I wouldn’t have paid attention to her, checked to make sure making this space was doable, and then simply done it. That day I learnt I can’t share my dreams with everyone, even people I think should be in my corner. I would have had greater self-confidence. There are several locations being rented as of right now for the same purposes.
